Diana Gutierrez is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in bioengineering with a concentration in cell and tissue engineering. Her thesis project involves the study of nanopolymeric structures known as a Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers when treated with pancreatic islets. This project is in collaboration with the College of Pharmacy in Dr. Hong’s lab where the nanostructure is synthesized. Theses nanostructure PAMAM dendrimers have been proven as efficient delivering vehicles due to their unique chemical and physical features. Dendrimers can penetrate into islets with minimal toxicity and preserved function. The ultimate goal of the project is to optimize an effective delivery system of molecular therapeutic cargos into islets which could significantly improve islet transplantation outcomes.
