“My islet transplant continues to leave me insulin-free and gives me a sense of real appreciation for the things I have.”

We need your help with the Chicago Marathon!!! Volunteers needed!
Hello,
This year the Chicago Diabetes Project, directed by our Chief of Transplant Surgery, Dr. Jose Oberholzer, is an official Charity Sponsor in the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. The Chicago Diabetes Project is a global research project working together to find a functional cure for Type I diabetes. (www.chicagodiabetesproject.org).
We have over 125 runners on our team, “Cell Mates on the Run”, and have raised over $100,000 since April. This year race day, Sunday, October 11th, is extremely important to us because we have the opportunity to cheer our runners, raise awareness for the CDP and represent UIC’s campus at the same time. Together with the Bank of America we have secured Miles 14, 17, 18 and 25 as Cheering Stations for UIC and the Chicago Diabetes Project.
Please come out, volunteer and support our runners! Amongst our runners, we have over 30 that are either physicians, nurses, research specialists, staff and/or students at UIC. Our runners need your enthusiasm and spirit to get them through 26.2 miles. They have trained for 18 weeks to help diabetics across the world…help them reach the finish line!
Please contact the Charity Coordinator for the Chicago Diabetes Project, Rachel Paus, directly at rpaus@uic.edu or 312.996.1673. She will be able to send you complete volunteer information and details.
We look forward to making this a memorable day for all involved and a tradition for years to come!
