With advances in islet cell transplantation, researchers are successfully replacing defective insulin producing cells called islets, with healthy islets cells from a human donor. Clinical trials in Type 1 diabetics are proving successful. Most recipients are insulin-free within a few weeks following the procedure. Many recipients maintain insulin independence and normal glucose tolerance for years following the procedure.
